Candle making crafts have been around for centuries and with the bits and pieces we have today it is so easy to involve the kids in this simple craft without risk of burns if all care is taken to only involve the kids once the wax has cooled.

Here is a project that the kids will enjoy.

Line a cooking tray with non-stick baking paper.

Melt your wax in the usual way in a double boiler to the right temperature using a candle thermometre so that you do not over heat. This is a good way to use up old candles and the kiddies could help you pull the wax off the old wicks. Read the rest of this entry »

candlesHere is a thought for Valentine’s Day.  If you make some heart shaped candles in red they will be perfect for a romantic evening.

You could either make them in heart-shaped moulds or another technique is to place some non-stick baking paper in a cooking tray and pour your wax into it.  Gently tap the tray and level out the wax.  When the wax has cooled but not set use a heart-shaped metal cookie cutter and cut out the shapes.  Push a wick up through the bottom and cut off.

These can then be used as floating candles or in little dishes on the table. Read the rest of this entry »

birthday Work from home business ideas for the craftyFor those who would like to earn money in a homebased business and are a little crafty look at this gift basket idea with a difference. You have the choice of also being hands on and making product or you can simply purchase it and sell it on.   This particular one is selling edible products.

Candle Business for making gift baskets

I am not sure about whether you could base a whole business on candle baskets but most definitley it could be part of the business where you are selling things like edible products.  Of course if you were going to mix the two in the same basket then care would need to be taken with scented candles being included.  Special wrapping of the candles would need to be taken care of.

A gift basket business uses many of the creative craft skills of a person and can be a lot of fun.

Selecting fragrances for your candle making

wedding candlesFragrances are a personal choice, don’t you think?

There are many things to consider when you are choosing your fragrances and your choices would I am sure be motivated by a different reason if you are making candles for home or if you are making candles for a money making venture.   Votive candles are some of the most popular scented candles, whereas some of the fancy theme candles are not scented at all.

For Business

Matching color and scents

When you are making candles for your business the idea is to match the colors of the candles to the scent of the candle, or the other way around, whichever you think the most appropriate for your style.  If you have candles in the earthy tones it is quite likely you would choose a candle fragrance like sandlewood or similar, whereas if you are making a red candle you might choose strawberry or another fruity type scent.

Candle making and choosing your wick

An almost burnt-down lit candle on a candle ho...
Image via Wikipedia

For the beginner candle maker there are quite a few challenges in choosing the right wick to do the job.   For this reason it is probably a good idea to only buy a few wicks at a time.

The pre-tabbed wicks are very good in that they are coated with a high melt wax and with the round tin base and the small neck they stand straight and this makes for better burning as the candle burns to a lower level.

The reason that using the right wick is so important is because it affects the burning factor of the candle.  Over time you will become more adept at choosing the right wick for the job so to help you do this, take notes so that you know what wick you have used in what candle, the wax type, the fragrance you chose and so on.  Because you will most likely make all sorts of different shaped and sizes of candles keep a note of the height and the width of the candle.

This is the way to find out what is the perfect burn factor for the candles that you want to make.

floating candles and petalsIt is now only 2 months to Valentine’s Day.

It would be a lovely present to give your loved one a specially made Valentine’s candle.

Here are some ideas for you to ponder:

  • make a red pillar candle and hang a heart shape around it
  • make a red heart shaped candle
  • make some floating candles which could be red and float them in clear water or color the water red and make some colored candles to float on top
  • find some red highball glasses and create a romantic scene with a some tealights in themcandle making
  • if you can’t find red highball glasses, wrap some red cellophane around clear highball glasses and use those (take care that the paper is taped at the top outside the glass so that it is not free to blow in any wind – use double sided tape on the outside rim of the glass to secure any paper used

Start planning a project now and you will have plenty of time to have it finished by Valentine’s Day.

If you have not made candles before but you would like to learn our ebook Candle Making – Start with Confidence will tell you all you need to know to start.

Be innovative with your candle making – ice candles

Categories:  Candle Making Tips
Tags: , , , , , , ,

Although they do not seem to be as popular at the moment, I always loved the ice candles wheice candle winter craft photo 420 FF0108EFGA01 150x150 Be innovative with your candle making ice candlesre you stack ice into a container which could be a milk container and then pour the ice over it.   When the wax has set the ice melts away and leaves holes in the candle.   If you want to try this there is one important point to make sure of and that is to ensure that the wick is running straight and that it will be coated with wax so the stacking of the ice is a little critical to ensure the wax is against the wick..  It is also a good idea to use a wick that is coated with wax.  See the pic from http://familyfun.go.com/crafts/ice-candle-673590/

Candle making is a craft that really lends itself to creativity.  I know that you would be creative if for say, you make a quilt, but the difference is that with candle making, once you have learnt the basics of handling the wax and setting the right wicks, you can manipulate the wax and really have a lot of fun.

6 Safety tips for candle making

Categories:  Candle Making Tips
Tags: , , , , ,

hospital[1]There are 6 tips to help with the safety of your candle making.   These tips are not in the actual candle making themselves so often get overlooked.

1.  Have a pair of thin cotton gloves handy for holding the hot molds.  Using a piece of cloth or something similar is not a good practice because loose ends can end up in the hot wax and cause drips or hit you on the hand and you will be burnt.

2.  Keep a chemical fire extinguisher handy in case of fire.  This is the type of extinguisher you need to have on hand in case of a flash fire from the wax.
