Unscented votive candles have their place

pink soothing spa feelingThere is such a craze on scent candles that you almost stop and think about making candles unscented.  But you know, there are many times that you might not want to have a scented votive candle.

For example you may not want to confuse scents if you were going to have votive candles near a bubblebath because you might like a favorite scent in the bath instead.  Also if you were having a dinner with succulent food you might prefer to have candles unscented so that the smell of the food is not tainted with the perfume of the candles.

For this reason, if you have a home candle making business you might prefer to have a range of scented votive candles and some unscented votive candles so that your clients can choose as their needs require.

I have got a bit of a thing about votive candles, I always think they look so cute.  Don’t ask me why, I don’t know.  It is always the softer colored ones that I like so much, must bring out the romantic side in me!

For a home based candle maker to make money selling at craft shows there are a few basics that need to be in place.  I would not display my candles like the ones in the picture. It would look much more attractive if there were half the candles were displayed with some space in between each grouping to show off each group to its maximum.  This display just looks like it has been thrown together to get the candles out of the carrying boxes.

A good burn means repeat business

One of the most important aspects that make selling candes or any craft successful is that it must be of good quality.  As far as candles are concerned the most important thing for repeat business is a good burn to the candle.  This is not an obvious feature to the buyer at the show, but if you want repeat business then a good burn and a good scent throw, if you have scents in the candle, are important.

Candle factory and shop, Denmark

If you have a candle making business one type of candle that you are sure to find popular is the taper candle and they are very easy to make by dipping them to create the thickness that you want.  You can either have the candle same color throughout or you can purchase white candles and dip them in colored wax if you prefer to do it this way.

If you are starting from the beginning

Cut your wick 1 inch longer than you require your candle.

Melt your candle wax, color it and use the candle scent that you want.  You will need to find a container that is deep enough for the length of candle that you want.

Hold the wick and dip the candle to coat the wick.  Check to see that there is a 100% coverage of the wick Read the rest of this entry »

If you have a home candle making business you will find that the internet is a great way to make sales.  There are several ways to do this and I will discuss those, but I just wanted to emphasis that you need to have in place a payment system so that when customers purchase your items they can pay by credit card and you can also have a copy of their email so you can contact them and put them in your database.

A world wide accepted payment method is Paypal.  It won’t cost you have an account but you do pay a small amount when you transact through them.  Set up a Premium Account and that will be all you need for a small home business.

Any small home business that sells to the public or has the public visit their premises needs to have public liability insurance.  That includes candle making businesses.

Public liability insurance is to cover accidents and also covers faulty products.  For example reasons that a candle would want coverage for:

  • a candle maker may make a candle and for some reason a customer has a fire at home and proves that the candle was faulty and that is why there was a fire started
  • at a stall where you were selling candles, a customer caught there foot on a trestle leg, tripped and broke a leg Read the rest of this entry »

Candles / Velas

It seems that you have either decided to start a candle making business from home or you are considering doing so.  I just love working from home and have done so for over 12 years now.  I admit I have done several small businesses in finding something that I really love doing and you may find the same thing.

I have always been a believer that you should work at something you enjoy so that when you get up in the morning you just love going to work and most of the time you are a happy person becuase you love your job.  This reflects on your relationships, business and personal, and on your family.  My stress levels sky rocket when I am not happy with my work.  For example, I have held a real estate licence and owned my own office, but I just did not enjoy that at all.  I love deal with real estate but not selling real estate. I love the challenges of it, property investing, renovating and Read the rest of this entry »

Packaging and selling candle tips for your homemade candles

bath essentialsWhen selling any item one very important factor is to make sure that it is displayed well.  It does not matter whether the item is a candle or an item of clothing, no matter how lovely the item is, if it is not display well then the chances of selling it are much less limited.

How to display your candles for selling

Candles are one item that does sell on its own in a lot of cases, especially the bigger ones, so they can be displayed in groupings of style and/or color.  Keep the taller ones further away from the customer and bring down the sizing but in such a way that even the taller ones get a good viewing.  This may mean that you need to prop the back candles up even higher so that they can be seen and admired properly.

Once you have grouped your candles together, use some items like towels, soaps or flowers.   Create a theme wigreen spath your display.  It may be a seaside theme, a dining theme, a spa bath theme or whatever, but set it up in such a way that you tell your customer that this is the way you could use these candles.

If you do not have a lot of room you just might set up a themed area and have the candles grouped together nearby rather than a large display.

Selling packaged candles

You may decide to sell your candles in sets and to do this they would need to be packaged in groups of say 3’s or 6’s depending on what it is you are selling and on the final retail price.  Do keep Read the rest of this entry »
