It seems that you have either decided to start a candle making business from home or you are considering doing so.  I just love working from home and have done so for over 12 years now.  I admit I have done several small businesses in finding something that I really love doing and you may find the same thing.

I have always been a believer that you should work at something you enjoy so that when you get up in the morning you just love going to work and most of the time you are a happy person becuase you love your job.  This reflects on your relationships, business and personal, and on your family.  My stress levels sky rocket when I am not happy with my work.  For example, I have held a real estate licence and owned my own office, but I just did not enjoy that at all.  I love deal with real estate but not selling real estate. I love the challenges of it, property investing, renovating and Read the rest of this entry »

Egg-Shaped Candles

Now that Valentine’s Day is over we can focus on Easter candle making projects.

How did your Valentine’s Day candles go?  I hope you had a lovely day!

There is no surprise that when it comes to Easter we think of eggs!  Of course we do.  So how can you make Easter candles?

Personally I feel that the best way is to buy an egg mold and make your candle that way.

I know several people who like to mold their egg candles and they do this by making a layer of melted wax in tray first and when the wax is still a little soft they hand mold it into an egg shape then push their wick through.

MAKING MARBLE CANDLES

These can be made with store bought candles and can be so much fun and simple to do.

The idea of this is to end up with a candle that has a marblized finish.  You can make your own plain colored candles or you can simply buy some and start with that.

The basics of this is that you are dipping a one color candle (usually white for best effect) into water that has candle dye floating on top.  Different effects will be achieved depending on your dipping method – straight up and down, twirling around etc.

Here is how to make marble candles: Read the rest of this entry »

Most people who think of having a candle making home based business would probably think that it would be making candles and selling them through one source or another.  But another idea which could be very good to have as a business or even as part of a candle making home business would be to take lessons in candle making.

For a person to do this they would need to be very organised and plan well how they were going to do it because candle making is dealing with a flamable product so all safety precautions would need to be in place.  It would also pay to have public liability insurance to protect yourself as well.

There are many techniques that can be shown even to children and it would be possible by using a crockpot for the wax melting to have a quite safe environment for this all to happen.

It definitely is something worth thinking about for those who may be inclined to run this type of business because it is another craft and a lot of people just love to learn different crafts.

Operating a candle making home business is such a wonderful way to combine a hobby and a business together.  I believe in doing what you ove for a home business so that you get up every morning and enjoy what you are doing.

Making candles for a home business requires some research and it is a good idea to do this before you start making too many candles.

What would you research:

  • it would be a good idea to research what is selling in your area
  • which are the most popular candles sold
  • which designs are the most popular
  • what colors are the ‘in’ colors – are they the decorator colors or the homeopathic colors
  • what price range is the most popular
  • the most popular scents Read the rest of this entry »

Candle making and choosing your wick

An almost burnt-down lit candle on a candle ho...

For the beginner candle maker there are quite a few challenges in choosing the right wick to do the job.   For this reason it is probably a good idea to only buy a few wicks at a time.

The pre-tabbed wicks are very good in that they are coated with a high melt wax and with the round tin base and the small neck they stand straight and this makes for better burning as the candle burns to a lower level.

The reason that using the right wick is so important is because it affects the burning factor of the candle.  Over time you will become more adept at choosing the right wick for the job so to help you do this, take notes so that you know what wick you have used in what candle, the wax type, the fragrance you chose and so on.  Because you will most likely make all sorts of different shaped and sizes of candles keep a note of the height and the width of the candle.

This is the way to find out what is the perfect burn factor for the candles that you want to make.

  • make a red pillar candle and hang a heart shape around it
  • make a red heart shaped candle
  • make some floating candles which could be red and float them in clear water or color the water red and make some colored candles to float on top
  • find some red highball glasses and create a romantic scene with a some tealights in themcandle making
  • if you can’t find red highball glasses, wrap some red cellophane around clear highball glasses and use those (take care that the paper is taped at the top outside the glass so that it is not free to blow in any wind – use double sided tape on the outside rim of the glass to secure any paper used

Start planning a project now and you will have plenty of time to have it finished by Valentine’s Day.

6 Safety tips for candle making

Categories:  Candle Making Tips
Tags: , , , , ,

hospital[1]There are 6 tips to help with the safety of your candle making.   These tips are not in the actual candle making themselves so often get overlooked.

1.  Have a pair of thin cotton gloves handy for holding the hot molds.  Using a piece of cloth or something similar is not a good practice because loose ends can end up in the hot wax and cause drips or hit you on the hand and you will be burnt.

2.  Keep a chemical fire extinguisher handy in case of fire.  This is the type of extinguisher you need to have on hand in case of a flash fire from the wax.
